Service area02 / The basics
The EPA describes a typical septic system as a septic tank and a drainfield, also called a soil absorption field. The tank digests organic matter and separates floatable matter, such as oils and grease, and solids from the wastewater. The solids settle to the bottom as sludge, while oil and grease float to the top as scum.
The liquid, called effluent, flows on to the drainfield, which the EPA describes as a shallow, covered excavation made in unsaturated soil, where the soil accepts, treats and disperses the wastewater as it percolates through. The tank is what gets pumped, inspected and, when its position is lost, located. Thomas Septic, LLC, based in Maynardville, Tennessee, does all three across eleven East Tennessee counties.
